I've never found them to be particularly effective. They have always
seemed to me to be an attempt to sell a product which is less effective
than something that can be done easily and cheaply without (namely
using iced water).

The ones for beer cans work better, as they stand a better chance of
cooling the contents before they themselves warm up.
