I've also been recommended spikey things (e.g. gravel) around the plants - apparently they don't like crawling over the spikes. Broken eggshells another option. Or, I am told, copper wire round the rim of your pots. Thankfully, I had only about a week of trouble, & then before I could do anything about it, they stopped. Touch wood. The thing that puts me off the beer concept (other than that I don't like killing things, even slugs, really) is having to get rid of a bowl of beer-&-dead-slugs afterwards. Ew.
