I seem to remember hearing a while back that Ciabatta was actually only
'invented' in the mid-80s by the Italian government to try and combat
the rise in popularity of Baguettes.

I can find nothing to confirm or deny this however.

Speaking of baguettes I really hate piddlingly narrow ones but when I
was mooching round Chapel Street market on Saturday I had a sausage
sandwich from a stall that had truly massive baguettes - at least 6
inchease acorss. And damn were they delicious - a much softer crust,
slightly flatter and a paler colour than the bullet hard golden things
you get from supermarkets.

The guy at the stall said that he just got it from his wholesaler -
anybody know where to get them retail?
