Chives need to be planted the year before and left to winter, really. You
get single sprouts the first year and then they go a bit mad after that.
 
Mine all died from being used as catseats last year.

I have some, and grew some from seed last year. It did grow a bit and then
died. It's much easier to grow from a cutting.

You could also try properplants.com - I bought some herbs from them last
year and they were excellent and helpful.
 
Mint is incredibly easy to grow - hte big problem with it is that it will
Take Over The World (and that's *my* job!).
